FIGHT THAT URGE NO LONGER! Our chats are literally breathing life into me. I want to know your opinions and worries at every turn! Obviously I'm happy I'm doing Ferrante all month because it's fun, but I kind of wish I was reading other translated works. Your selections sound interesting, as do all the translated books you listed.

Another reminder to pick up An Artist of the Floating World. Thank you! Can't wait to hear from you in my DMs in 5 minutes 🤣 (I'm serious, I can't wait).

More great writeups and recommendations! I have The Memory Police waiting for me as an audiobook and you already know how much I love If On a Winter's Night... and An Artist...There are a couple of other books you mentioned that sound intriguing.

I'm a huge fan of David Mitchell - have you read his other books? I've read them all, and funnily, Cloud Atlas is one of my least favourites, but that might be because I read it last. I like discovering new writers and reading their lesser known works. It's a Woman in Translation, but I'm reading my first Joan Didion, 'Miami', which I don't think is one of her most read books.

My favourite Mitchell books are The Thousand Autumns... and Black Swan Green

I’ve read Cloud Atlas and Utopia Avenue. Loved them both!! And I have Autumns of Jacob (lol shortened) in my physical TBR which I plan to read in September.

I haven’t read any Didion but if you get to read more of her books, do let me know where to start.

Honestly, if you end up reading even more Mitchell books, you're in for such a treat. I really enjoyed Cloud Atlas and Utopia Avenue even though they are both my least favourite - he's such a great writer that even my least favourite of his books are still great reads! Crazy to think about it like that - his entire oeuvre is so strong.

This Didion is very personal since it deals with Miami and there's a lot of discussion of the Cuban presence in the 80s. My dad is from Miami and he lived in a Cuban neighbourhood (he's not Cuban) and it's like going back into a time machine from the times I visited growing up. Not sure it would be everyone's cup of tea. I'm eager to see how it compares to some of her more popular works.

>I picked this book up because my brother lent me a couple of books by Filipino authors and I decided to read these books at least one a month.

In case there’s still space for a pinoy book, I’d love to send you a copy of my historical novel, Rajah Versus Conquistador. Here’s a nice review https://exlibrisphilippines.com/2025/05/23/rajah-versus-conquistador-humabon-and-the-why-of-history-resurrected/
