Book Reco # 8: Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
A story of the rise and fall of a fictional 70's rock band.
Hi Dear Reader,
Today’s book recommendation is Daisy Jones and The Six. This post has been sitting in my drafts for so long because I keep posting the newer books I’ve read first but here we go.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 stars
Reading Daisy Jones & The Six is like reading a documentary script. I can feel the tension while reading the same way you watch a documentary reaching its climax. I can feel the sarcasm, anger, and all the other feelings of the people"talking". Although a lot of people dislike the book format, it's actually one of the reasons why I loved this book.
The overarching point of the book was to backtrack and discover why this popular 70s rock group suddenly disbanded at the peak of their career. To do that, a reporter interviews the band members and their inner circle about what happened. At the beginning of the narration, I was imagining the characters being in the same room together. Then, I realized they were not because they talked freely and truthfully. Plus, each character were talking about different versions of the same event. As the author states at the start of the book, "The truth often lies, unclaimed, in the middle" - in between different versions of the event. And this is why, this documentary style of writing works for this story. I can’t believe the author was able to pull off thus kind of writing. It's amazing. No words wasted. No sentence rushed.
The book is so eventful and something was always happening. There was no downtime. It’s an easy read yet it’s so heavy. The writing is light, a book you can finish in a day. But idk how many times I cried. My favorite plotlines were those about female friendships.
Generally, I don’t like characters like Daisy. She's terrible and I’d usually stop reading immediately with these type of characters. She's kind of those messy, manic pixie dream girls. But I'm glad she redeemed herself in the end.
This book doesn't revolve on one character only but highlights every member of the band. We get to hear the story of each one, even that of a typical minor character.
As of this writing, the adapted series just finished. Critics weren’t satisfied but I was.
Happy reading and thanks for giving me a space in your inbox!
